No holidays for entrepreneurs this year!
Many of my customers seem to work extremely hard in order to make their business a success. Today, I read a report that suggests that perhaps some of them are working too hard!

A recent study by telecoms firm Unicom asked business owners whether they would be able to take a holiday this summer. 42% of them said that they would not be able to because of work pressures that they are under. Another study showed that UK entrepreneurs work an average of 50 hours per week!

Despite this, I am always amazed by the amount of passion and energy shown by my customers when they talk about their business. While this enthusiasm for their business keeps them going, I do wonder whether it affects their home life or affects the quality of their work.

I don’t think I could work to the same high standard if I worked 50 hour weeks, non-stop all year without a holiday, so I don’t know how small business owners cope with such a heavy workload!

I would be interested to hear what the workloads of people on this site are, from both self-employed business owners as well as employees, and whether you think that 50 hours per week with no holidays is simply too much work!

My husband and I started our cafe-restaurant 12 months ago. We have a 2 yr old son.
Prior to this we had a nice life, couple of hols a year and a good work life balance.
Now.... he works good 50-60 hours weeks (reduced from earlier periods in the year) and I am working a good 30 hour week whilst balancing child care too! We have not had a holiday this year - a day off feels like a holiday.
However, we took the decision in July to close our cafe between Christmas and New Year. All our staff were due holiday, trade last year was slow during this period and as we use local producers, many of who close during this period, it made sense. With the credit crunch we are slightly nervous about this decision but it will cost almost as much to open as to stay closed and we need a break to recharge and step back from the daily grind to reevaluate our plans for next year.
My parents ran their own business and my mothers advice was to ensure we took breaks - although it is easier said than done!!!
Taking a step back to reevaluate your goals moving forward I think is a good plan.
My parents used to own a chip shop. They started off working 7 days a week and wondered why they got ill! Eventually they closed the shop on Monday and also half day on Sunday.

When they did close the shop for a 'holiday' it was usually to visit family back in Malaysia, which wasn't a relaxing affair! Now they've retired they've been going on holiday loads though! And they deserve it!

I always said that I never wanted my own business because seeing my parents in action I knew how much hard work it was but these days I find myself working so hard for my employer, and have increased stressed levels that actually I'd rather have my own business so at least I can reap the rewards of my efforts!

In times like these it's quite exciting (I am lucky enough to be financially secure and have family support) since the contract market is so competitive with so may people being laid off work, I'd rather spend time researching and putting a business plan together over the Christmas holidays rather than looking for a new job once my contract ends!
I`m working harder than ever. Up at 6 am and back home at 8 pm when really busy. Normal 50 hours/week. I may say : alive and kickin`. Even with this credit crunch, I won`t give up ! Less spending, more working.

Holidays now ? I wish i can. i`ll be working between X-mas and New Years Eve...
