Business Mergers

Sometimes merging with another business is a viable means of expansion, or in these rough economic times, of just remaining in business. Is this something you have considered?

Whatever the difficulties in the current economic climate, mergers and acquisitions are still going ahead. Buyers and sellers are active. First, there are deals which simply have to be done. For example, defensive mergers where by a cash-strapped but otherwise profitable business merges with a competitor or where a cash-generative businesses has made an offer which the seller simply cannot refuse.

This can be the nightmare scenario for the founder of any company - almost the resignation of defeat!!

Any merger should bring an improvement or benefit in the trading situation for both parties. It could be simply an Increase in market share, perhaps some reduction in costs or an expand your product offering into allied sectors of your current market.

Beware of any new market opportunities where you are not familiar - and with all mergers due diligence is key.

Sort out the internal hygiene issues around roles and responsibilities, reporting lines, job security, pay rises/decreases etc......... as the most important priority after the deal is done - the uncertainty will demotivate the workforce quicker than anything else.

good luck.............

Sometimes combining businesses can be a stroke of brilliance too, if you're talking about a business that compliments yours, and one in which you can share the premises as well.

Sometimes it seems the only big downside to such a scheme is deciding who's going to be in charge.
