Too many people starting up in business see negotiation as a chore and haggling as an embarrassment or a waste of time. As a buyer, if you spend 15 minutes knocking £500 off the price of a piece of equipment, you effectively earn your business £2,000 an hour. Here are some golden rules to heed. And also an upcoming event in London to help with negotiating skills and techniques.

LL and SG I agree entirely - and in fact if you think about it from when children begin to talk - they begin to barter and negotiate about most things, going to bed, stay up late, when to do homework etc.. In everything we do there is an opportunity to negotiate more favorable terms that fit better in what WE want to do, as opposed to what the OTHER PERSON wants from the negotiation. We have all done it, we all do it, its just formalising what we already do in day to day life..... don't miss out!! rgds -- Geoff Gwynn

An effective set of negotiating skills is far more than something to be pulled out when things get tough. It needs to be a day-to-day tool that the owner or manager uses as second nature in virtually all aspects of maintaining a business. The ability to recognize when you can get even a little bit more by implementing appropriate techniques is the way to success! ModeratorSG

When you consider it, there is so much negotiation that we conduct in day to day life that we take for granted. But to be in business (for yourself or someone other) means to be truly comfortable with negotiation. Especially in difficult financial climates when your very existence may depend upon your ability to work out a deal. Business Negotiation Skills is an upcoming event which will help you learn how to improve your business’ profitability with some effective negotiation skills. The one-day workshop includes how to decide when to sell and when to negotiate, the financial implications of negotiation and how to create a tactical action plan for negotiation.
