Hi, I have noticed in recent years the growth of the internet has brought about a change in public relations. This intrigues me. How are you using online PR to build awareness of your business and what advice would you give new businesses looking to exploit the wealth of PR opportunity online? Thanks for you time. Peter

I would suggest that any PR you do is aimed for both online and offline media, they don't tend to differentiate. There are some great online services for submitting your press releases and these do also generate links to the site. Something else I would suggest that we have found very effective online is writing articles, many sites are looking for good content and you will often get it covered on multiple sites all sending small bits of traffic back via any links in the article. -- Gavin Wheeldon Applied Language Solutions www.appliedlanguage.com

If you have a new business and do not know where to start with any form of PR, I can recommend trying a DIY course in PR to give you a basic understanding of how it works. From this you will be able to taylor your requirement to your own business on and off line.

I would agree with much of what has been said below - it is important to keep a mix of PR campaigns and each has their own separate benefits. I see the major benefits of online PR in the speed of reaction. We work in an industry (Education) where policy announcements are made centrallyand regularly which can affect our business instantly. Online PR is the quickest and most effective method that we have found for getting a response to an announcment out there and potentially trying to take as much advantage as possible from it.

PR should only form part of your marketing mix. We have a very good PR team, but it takes a while for them to understand exactly what you want, so be selective and use word of mouth to get the right PR people involved. PR should not be specifically online though, offline is just as important to building your profile in the market.

We have done all of our PR on line. There are free PR opportunities in the form of websites (most US but this does not matter). We issue several PR releases per year and as a result the links to our website have propelled us up on the google rankings. Keep you releases short and punchy.
